A 2K Sports spokesperson said on Friday in a statement that it will unveil the official NBA 2K21 cover athletes in July, according to Andrew Lopez of ESPN.
The announcement came just one day after New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson appeared in a new trailer for NBA 2K21 during the Sony PlayStation 5 reveal event. His inclusion in the trailer created speculation that he would be the cover athlete but 2K Sports clarified that he was simply included because of his fit to show off the game.
Williamson is seen dribbling the ball and dunking on the court in the one-minute trailer. He put his elite athleticism and shooting skills on full display in the clip and proved to be perfect for the unveiling given his marketability and following on social media.

As stated by 2K Sports, the video game will feature multiple cover athletes in the next installment after Anthony Davis appeared on the NBA 2K20 cover.
