Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander was one of four players to drop four potential interceptions during the 2019 season, tying for the NFL lead, according to Pro Football Focus.
Joining Alexander with four dropped picks were three other cornerbacks: Carlton Davis of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Malcolm Butler of the Tennessee Titans and Stephon Gilmore of the New England Patriots.
A first-round pick in 2018, Alexander finished his 2019 season with two interceptions and 17 pass breakups, tied for the fourth-most in the NFL.
By all accounts, Alexander enjoyed a notable second-year jump after an encouraging rookie season. He produced more pass breakups and allowed a lower completion percentage, fewer yards per target and a lower passing rating into his coverage, and his overall coverage grade at PFF improved by almost four points.
Another developmental jump – combined with a more consistent ability to convert turnover opportunities – could transform Alexander from a top young cornerback into one of the NFL’s best cover corners and a potential Pro Bowler in 2020.
PFF recently included Alexander, who is still only 23 years old, on the site’s list of the 25 best players under the age of 25. He has contested targets and forced incompletions at a rate consistent with the top 10 cornerbacks over the last two seasons.
Dropped interceptions might have a negative connotation but the stat reveals mostly good things about a player. To drop an interception, a cornerback like Alexander must be in position and have a legitimate chance of creating the turnover. Missed takeaway opportunities can hurt, but it beats the alternative.
The Packers defense still created 17 interceptions, the third-most in the NFL. Chances to add to that tally were missed by both Alexander and Kevin King, who also dropped several interceptions. The missed opportunities suggest the Packers will have a chance to remain a top takeaway team in 2020.
