Rockets guard James Harden and center P.J. Tucker are joining numerous star athletes and celebrities in a special event to honor high school seniors in Houston who had their year greatly impacted by COVID-19.
Led by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, the virtual graduation event will be televised several times throughout the weekend (complete schedule).
Besides Harden and Tucker, other local athletes on the guest list include defensive end J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans; shortstop Carlos Correa of the Houston Astros; and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.
In a statement previewing the event, Turner said:
The 2020 high school senior class has achieved a major milestone during what is certainly one of the nationโs most challenging times in recent history. They have sacrificed and endured, and I am so proud of every one of them. That is why I have asked the city of Houston, along with some extraordinary personalities, to come together to honor and encourage these amazing students with a unique and special celebration.
The broadcast premiere is set for 6:30 p.m. local time on Friday.
