The Houston Texans have decided to not add defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan to their roster.
According to a report from the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, the Texans feel comfortable with their depth at defensive tackle and uncomfortable with Jernigan’s injury history. Thus, the AFC South champions will not make official a one-year, $3.75 million contract that had $1.25 million guaranteed.
The report stated that Dr. Robert Watkins cleared Jernigan. However, the former Baltimore Raven and Philadelphia Eagle missed six games in 2019 due to injury and then 13 the year prior.
On April 16, coach and general manager Bill O’Brien referred to Jernigan as a “big get” in the club’s free agency haul.
“That was a big get for us to be able to bring Timmy Jernigan onto our roster, which is somebody I didn’t mention earlier but I should have,” said O’Brien.” I still think we’ve got to add depth there.”
With the Texans’ 40th overall pick in Round 2 of the NFL Draft, Houston added Ross Blacklock out of TCU, who has the ability to play defensive tackle but also kick outside, similar to Jernigan’s skillset.
