If you had to pick one Tennessee Titans team of the last 50 years that was the most dominant, which team would it be?
Mike Sando of The Athletic recently compiled a list of the most dominant single-season team of every franchise since 1970, using this criteria:
- Regular-season win-loss record (35 percent).
- Regular-season points-per-game ratio (35 percent).
- Postseason winning percentage (10 percent).
- Postseason PPG ratio (10 percent).
- Regular-season and postseason point differential versus teams that finished the regular season with winning records (10 percent).
For the Titans, Sando chose the 2000 team that went 13-3 during the regular season but lost in the divisional round of the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens, 24-10.
Tennessee’s 2000 squad landed at No. 27 on the list when compared to the most dominant team from every NFL franchise named by Sando.
Here’s how he came to his conclusion about his choice for the Titans:
“We lumped the Houston Oilers, Tennessee Oilers and Tennessee Titans together. The 2000 Titans prevailed because they tied for the best record and ranked first in regular-season PPG ratio among all Oilers/Titans teams since 1970. The 2008 and 1999 teams were better in other areas and were not far behind in our formula. The 1979 “Luv Ya Blue” Oilers created lasting memories, but they ranked 330th overall after barely outscored their opponents and posting a negative point differential against winning teams. The 2019 Titans ranked 347th overall, dragged down by a 9-7 record and a relatively low 1.2 regular-season PPG ratio.”
While the 2000 team no doubt had a disappointing end to its season, former head coach Jeff Fisher always says that team was the best he ever coached with the franchise, despite the fact that it didn’t make it to the Super Bowl like the 1999 team did.
