Never wear the same pants to play golf that you wear to church. That’s one of the lessons Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady learned from his involvement in The Match: Champions for Charity.
On Wednesday, Brady shared to his 7.6 million Instagram followers a list of lessons he learned from his experience participating in Sunday’s charity golf tournament along with teammate Phil Mickelson and opponents Tiger Woods and longtime NFL rival Peyton Manning, who he declared, “is still clutch.”
The pants reference is a self-deprecating play on the memorable moment after Brady holed out his approach from more than 100 yards at the par-5 seventh hole and split his pants down the seam while bending over. Brady was forced to play the rest of the match in his rain pants. He went to great lengths to point out on social media that his wardrobe malfunction wasn’t the fault of his endorser, Under Armour, and joked on Twitter, “Pants wanted in on social distancing, I guess.”
Brady also heaped praise on Mickelson, who lined up putts and coached Brady around the course as they mounted a back-nine comeback that fell short.
“As great as @philmickelson is as a golfer, he is a better man, coach and teammate and potentially has the best calves on the PGA Tour,” Brady wrote.
As for Tiger? “@tigerwoods was a great host and champion, and I was especially thankful he missed the putt on the 7th hole…had he made it, I would have just went home.”
Brady wrapped up the list of nine lessons learned by stating, “I’m sticking to my day job,” which is a good thing given how the 8 handicap played more like a 28 handicap for much of the round at Medalist Golf Club.
“Amazing what happens when groups of people come together for the common good,” Brady wrote of the $20 million raised for coronavirus relief and the 5.8 million viewers who shared in the experience.
