The Wisconsin Union has temporarily closed the iconic Memorial Union Terrace and the surrounding area

[lawrence-newsletter]The University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Union have temporarily shut down the Memorial Union Terrace and part of Alumni Park in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. Any former Badger or current Badger knows the significance of the terrace, especially in the summer months, as a place where the community gathers and enjoys the free time. It’s hard to see such an iconic summer location be closed off, and we all would like to see a return to normalcy as soon as it is deemed safe.

“There is nothing like summer on the Terrace and this year more than ever, we are committed to ensuring our community can enjoy this special place,” Mark Guthier, the associate vice chancellor for student affairs and director of the Wisconsin Union, said in a press release. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to put in place measures to welcome members and guests back safely.”

There were concerns about whether or not rules and guidelines were being followed correctly at the terrace over the past few weeks, and this decision comes from the Wisconsin Union as a way to try and make the area safer in these strange times.

For any Badger, this closure certainly puts into perspective just how strange these times are.
