The NFL chose to table the most radical proposed change to the league’s minority hiring requirements but still passed three very significant updates to the rule.
The changes to the Rooney Rule include doubling the required minority candidates a team much interview for a head coaching vacancy to two. It also adds that any team hiring a general manager much includes one minority candidate, the same being for any coordinator position. The NFL is also requiring one minority or female interview for any senior or club level position with the league.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney is the man who spearheaded the rule that bears his name. The rule was put in place in 2003 as a tool to help stimulate more minority head coaching hires. This new expansion should provide minority and female candidates even more opportunities for top positions in the NFL.
