Report: Patriots, Patrick Chung agree to two-year extension

Patrick Chung and the Patriots agreed to a two-year extension through 2023.

The New England Patriots and safety Patrick Chung have agreed to a two-year extension through 2023, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Chung, 32, has been with the team for 10 of his 11 seasons in the NFL. He’s been a core piece in New England’ secondary — which was arguably the best in the NFL last season. Chung finished 2019 off with 51 tackles and three passes deflected in 12 games played.

The deal includes $3 million to sign and $12.8 million over the next four years, according to Yates. Chung cashed in on nearly $34 million during his entire career and this deal will likely finish off time in the league.

With the deal, the Patriots will create $925 thousand in cap space.

The Patriots have some depth at the safety position with Chung, Devin McCourty, Adrian Phillips, Terrence Brooks and the rookie Kyle Dugger. Chung will be a leader for the new players and continue to anchor the secondary alongside McCourty.
