Marlene and John Elacqua drove 14 hours to attend a memorial service for James Jordan, slain father of basketball superstar Michael Jordan, at Rockfish African Methodist Episcopal Church in Teachey, N.C. The tiny church was filled beyond capacity with 200 mourners and a throng of media and fans gathered outside on Aug. 15, 1993. As the Elacquas entered the church, a security guard stopped them. “I’m sorry, this is for family only.” “They are family,” Michael Jordan said, and motioned the guard away.
