Tennessee football: Players who wore No. 60

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has a football program rich in history and tradition, and over the years many great players have played on Rocky Top.

Vols Wire looks at which players wore each jersey number for the Volunteers.

No. 60

The number goes back to 1937 in UT football lore and it was first worn by Melvin Herring.

Herring, a halfback on Rocky Top, sported the number for one season.

It was later worn by Robbie Franklin, a defensive middle guard, from 1964-65. In 1966, Franklin moved to the offensive side of the ball where he played guard.

Franklin was later an assistant coach for the Big Orange. After football, he became an auctioneer for Knoxville’s Furrow Auction Company. The Knoxville product from Holston High School served as an auctioneer at Judge Tim Irwin’s charity auction at the juvenile court house.

Irwin also played football for UT. The Knoxville Central High School product played in the NFL.
