The NCAA Division I Council will vote on Wednesday to potentially reinstate on-campus activities across the country as soon as June 1, according to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated.
The current ban on on-campus activities is set to expire on May 31, which was initiated in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 40-person committee will have three options to consider to allow student-athletes to return to campuses:
- They can extend the current moratorium to keep campuses closed, though that option appears unlikely, according to the report.
- The NCAA can open campuses to allow voluntary workouts without coaching interaction.
- Finally, the NCAA can allow the required training, which would permit coaches to attend.
Schools across the country are apparently hoping the council will allow athletes to return for required training. Under this ruling, players can have their normal summer allotment of eight hours per week of training — six with strength coaches and two with on-field coaches.
Sports like football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball are among those that are hoping to move forward to allow training to begin in June. All athletes will be screened upon return while school officials will sanitize equipment and limit workouts to smaller groups.
While not all schools across the country are in a position to re-open, due to local health guidelines, many are expected to be ready to return at some point in June.
