Is May the month Oklahoma’s run on recruiting kicks off?

Five-star wide receiver and major Sooners target Mario Williams announced on Wednesday that he would be making his commitment on Friday. Four-star outside linebacker Clayton Smith also announced earlier on Wednesday that he has an announcement to make, too.

The four-star edge rusher or outside linebacker recently released a final six schools that included Oregon, Florida State, Texas, LSU, Kentucky and Oklahoma. Smith has been foreseen as a Longhorns, Sooners and LSU Tiger battle over the course of the last few months. He also received offers from Oregon, Florida State and Penn State.

Oklahoma is currently lagging the rest of its competition on the recruiting trail for the 2021 recruiting class. The Sooners only have five commitments, three of which are defenders, but Oklahoma currently has the 51st best recruiting class in the country according to Rivals.

If Smith’s announcement is a commitment, it would be the third defensive commitment Oklahoma has won over Texas in the state of Texas. Bryson Washington and Joshua Eaton were the first to make the move north of the Red River opposed to staying in Texas.
