For any given player entering the NBA, there is often a learning curve that comes with signing with a team. Players often have several things to adjust to on the court and off of it.
Perhaps one element that may go overlooked: Being financially smart.
Of course, players in the NBA are compensated quite well but with that comes additional responsibilities. The NBA goes through great lengths to educate players to be smart when it comes to their money as some have fallen into financial pitfalls over the years.
Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro was given that exact advice.
The rookie jumped on the Heat’s Instagram Live page with sideline reporter Jason Jackson to discuss a variety of topics, including the advice former head coach John Calipari gave him.
Save your money! Coach Cal told me the first thing to buy is a watch because you can sell those back and they appreciate over time. With the money thing, he definitely told me to save my money. Coach Cal has taught me really everything since college just how to be a pro. Ever since I got to Kentucky, he has always been on me about being a pro and just holding me accountable. Really, Coach Cal has been a big step when he came into my life.
Players each year are mandated by the NBA to attend the Rookie Transition Program, a four-day crash-course to provide a smooth transition into the league. They attend a series of presentations developed by the NBA and NBPA to offer life skills and ways to handle the newfound spotlight.
Between attending the Rookie Transition Program and hearing the message from his former head coach, Herro likely has it drilled in his head now to be financially responsible throughout his career in the NBA.
