The Houston Texans have won the AFC South for the past two seasons, but odds-makers see a new champion emerging from the division.
According to BetMGM, the Texans have the third-best odds to win the division at 2.8 to 1. Who has better odds? Try the Indianapolis Colts at 1.3 to 1 and the Tennessee Titans at 1.6 to 1.
It makes sense for the Titans to be considered favorably given Ryan Tannehill is returning under center for Tennessee, and they have some momentum coming off an AFC Championship Game appearance. The Titans were a win away from qualifying for the postseason in 2018, and they have stacked four consecutive seasons with a winning record. They are always in the hunt, and if the rest of the division takes a tumble, Tennessee will be there to claim the crown.
The Colts are favorites because of their signing of quarterback Philip Rivers and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. However, they were considered early favorites to win the AFC South in 2019. Quarterback Andrew Luck retiring in the preseason may have thrown them for a loop, but they did start the season 5-2 with a 2-0 record in the division. It was theirs to win, and they fell apart in the middle of the season.
What the odds show is that the Texans have invited plenty of question marks surrounding their team due to the low-number draft class and the trading of DeAndre Hopkins. The perception is quarterback Deshaun Watson doesn’t have anyone to throw to, and that their draft class won’t be able to help them in any way. The only way the Texans can overcome this perception is to get back on the football field and win.
