Dolphins coach Brian Flores unfazed by challenges of virtual offseason

The Miami Dolphins, like each of the NFL’s 32 teams, are facing the challenges that come with the COVID-19 crisis head on. With the hope that the league calendar will be able to continue without interruption in the fall, the Dolphins are forging ahead with attempting to build relationships, create trust and comfort with the Dolphins’ playbook remotely for the time being. The NFL has begun to set in place protocols for opening up league facilities, but there is no definite date in place for such action.

For the Dolphins, the challenges extend beyond that of a typical team. These Dolphins have brought in two dozen prominent players via free agency and the NFL Draft — which forecasts Miami to at least 50% turnover on their active roster for the second consecutive season. And to further complicate the matter, the Dolphins have two new coordinators on staff this offseason in Chad Gailey (previously retired) and Josh Boyer (promoted from within after the departure of Patrick Graham to New York).

But in a recent interview with Judy Battista of NFL.com, Brian Flores offers exactly what you’d expect of a promising young coach — a steadfast perspective.

“I guess I could get frustrated,” Flores told Battista. “But really, what does that do? That would be a waste of energy. I try to direct my energy to things I can control. Right now, it’s how can I make these meetings as good as they can be, so guys can get as much information, and can make as many improvements as we can, given the circumstances? I’m not going to dwell on what it could be.”

Flores’ perspective should come as no surprise to any Dolphins fan who has heard him speak over the last 16 months — he’s a very task oriented individual to tackles one day at a time. And with the climate of today, that’s a good mindset to operate within. Whether or not the Dolphins can adequately gel to find early success is a different story. But if they don’t, it isn’t going to be because of a bad attitude from Coach Flores in the build-up to the season.
