While some have begun to rank LaMelo Ball atop the 2020 NBA Draft big board, few have slotted him as the top overall pick for a variety of reasons. Ball is one of the most high-risk prospects in the draft with a low floor and a high ceiling. As with most ball-handling prospects, the wide variance could set the franchise back if the pick is wrong.
The other reason typically comes down to fit. With most mock drafts having the Warriors, who currently have the worst record in the league, at the top spot, the fit isn’t a clear one between Ball and Golden State.
But CBS Sports’ mock draft on Monday did take that risk. In a mock draft conducted by their panel of analysts, Ball was drafted first overall. David Cobb graded each pick after the fact and had the following to say about Ball landing with the Warriors:
My grade: B+
Unlike last season with Zion Williamson, who to pick No. 1 was not as clear. The Warriors have a more immediate need for help from a big man. But Ball will be able to develop under perennial All-Stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson and highly regarded coach Steve Kerr as the Warriors seek to compete immediately for another title.
Ball would slot into the Warriors’ long-term plans terrifically and would be a great fit in the system Steve Kerr has developed. But Golden State’s focus likely isn’t on the long-term with their title window still cracked open. Ball wouldn’t be a great fit in the short-term.
The outlook of the Warriors should they land the top pick will largely determine where Ball lands. Fit will play a huge role at the top of the 2020 NBA Draft for Ball and whether team view him as worth the risk.
