The football world mourns this afternoon upon the news that legendary head coach Don Shula, the long-time leader figurehead of the Miami Dolphins, passed away this morning at the age of 90. Shula, who had celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by family and former players back in January, leaves behind a monumental legacy as the NFL’s winningest head coach — as the outpouring of support from coaches and former players would indicate.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released the following statement on Shula’s passing this afternoon:
“Don Shula will always be remembered as one of the greatest coaches and contributors in the history of our game. He made an extraordinarily positive impact on so many lives. The winningest coach in NFL history and the only one to lead a team to a perfect season, Coach Shula lived an unparalleled football life. As a player, Hall of Fame coach, and long-time member and co-chair of the NFL Competition Committee, he was a remarkable teacher and mentor who for decades inspired excellence and exemplified integrity. His iconic legacy will endure through his family and continue to inspire generations to come. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Don’s wife Mary Anne along to his children Dave, Donna, Sharon and Mike, the Shula family, and the Dolphins organization.”
Without a shadow of a doubt, the news of Shula’s death marks the end of one of the NFL’s most accomplished and storied contributors, bar none. For those old enough to have seen him coach, Shula will forever be the one of the greatest. For those too young to have witnessed him prowling the Dolphins’ sidelines for over two decades, the aftermath of his passing should provide ample stories on his accomplishments, commanding coaching style and brilliance on and off the field.
