A busy night for the Miami Dolphins yesterday in Round 1 of the NFL Draft provided plenty of drama. Miami stood firm on their first two selections, drafting QB Tua Tagovailoa and OT Austin Jackson with their early selections before a trade back from 26 to 30 allowed Miami to pick up an additional Day 3 selection in this year’s NFL Draft as well.

Day 2 figures to provide plenty of fireworks as well and the night is still young. The Dolphins successfully added another piece to their offensive line with their fourth pick in this year’s draft, securing Louisiana’s Robert Hunt. And with their next pick, Miami is securing another physical presence on the defensive line.

With the 56th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins have selected Alabama defensive lineman Raekwon Davis. Davis, who is a senior defender from the University of Alabama, is a terrific fit for the Dolphins’ multiple front defense. Davis has the skill to play as a base defensive end but also has the length and block stacking skills to thrive in a more interior alignment — he’s going to command reps for the Dolphins up and down the line of scrimmage. Davis’ pass rush ceiling isn’t fully developed despite his high experience at Alabama, but some of that can be tied back to his usage at Alabama and what the Crimson Tide asked him to do.

Davis will look to follow in the footsteps of other Alabama interior defenders to unlock more disruption in the NFL than he was able to experience in the pros. Miami won’t have to wait long for their next pick — they’re scheduled to pick once again at pick 70.
