The rumors surrounding the Miami Dolphins’ first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft were all over the place. There was talk that they didn’t want Tua Tagovailoa, that they were considering trading up for offensive tackle Andrew Thomas, and preferred Justin Herbert at No. 5 overall.
Yet, when the time came for them to make their pick, they stood pat and took the guy they’ve been linked to for months. They selected Tagovailoa, passing on Herbert and three of the top offensive tackles in the draft.
It was the right call, too.
The Dolphins have had their eye on Tagovailao for more than a year, ever since the #TankForTua campaign got started. His stock took a hit after the hip injury, but he was always the team’s best option in the 2020 NFL Draft once they missed out on Joe Burrow and the No. 1 pick.
Tagovailoa not only brings stability at quarterback, but also excitement for the entire franchise. Fitzmagic was fun and the Josh Rosen experiment was worth exploring, but Tagovailoa is a legitimate franchise quarterback with an extremely high ceiling.
His accuracy, mobility, character and arm talent are all excellent, giving the Dolphins a player they can build around for years. And with three first-round picks, taking a quarterback at No. 5 was the wisest move for Miami.
They got a left tackle at No. 18 and secondary help could come later on, but finding a franchise QB after the fifth pick would’ve been incredibly difficult. The Dolphins nailed this pick.
