Georgia coach backs rumor of Dolphins trading up for OT

The Miami Dolphins’ plans for the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft are anything but obvious. One of the popular rumors as of late includes the Dolphins making a play to trade up in the early portions of this year’s draft — possibly even up to No. 3 overall — and make a play of an offensive tackle, not for a quarterback. That would be about as stunning of a shift as we’ve seen in recent memory, but one of the best approaches to the NFL Draft is to “never say never”. And at least one prominent figure seems to believe the Dolphins’ interest in an offensive tackle is legitimate.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart.

Smart made an appearance on NFL Network this afternoon and was asked about the rumors of Miami potentially trading up for tackle, specifically Georgia’s Andrew Thomas. And Smart, as you’d fully expect, was quick to vouch for his former player.

“It’ll be worth it,” said Smart. “I can promise you that.”

The question about trading up for a tackle predominantly centers around what the actual cost is of getting a deal done. If the Dolphins plan to draft a secondary quarterback option, they may come away from a swap with Detroit fairly unscathed. But if the team is looking to keep the No. 5 overall pick and still leap up to No. 3 with Detroit, you’re looking at quite a hefty (and intimidating) price tag. No matter how good Thomas may turn up, it’s hard to envision him being worth that price when it is all said and done.

We’ll know soon enough. Kickoff to the 2020 NFL Draft is just hours away. Stay tuned here at Dolphins Wire for all of the big updates throughout the first round.
