Going into the 2020 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans have the ninth-most cap space to work with in the NFL, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.
Official cap space by team entering the draft (1-11):
1. CLE: $37,547,510
2. DET: $29,488,200
3. PHI: $27,145,824
4. NYJ: $25,164,780
5. WAS: $24,943,685
6. DEN: $24,173,954
7. IND: $23,926,469
8. MIA: $22,682,552
9. TEN: $21,896,801
10. LAC: $20,994,933
11. BUF: $20,596,199— Field Yates (@FieldYates) April 21, 2020
Per Spotrac, the Titans have slightly less than what Yates has listed there, with the team’s cap space coming in at $21.6 million. Even with that lower figure, the Titans still rank ninth.
However, we must also factor in the Titans’ draft pool money. That figure stands at about $6.5 million, according to Spotrac, but could change if the team decides to trade out of the first round.
So, when the draft is all said and done, the Titans will have about $15 million left to spend on free agents (including undrafted ones), and that’s less than the reported $17 to $18 million prized free agent Jadeveon Clowney is seeking in a contract.
If the Titans still want to add him after the draft, general manager Jon Robinson will have to move some money around to make it work. Thankfully, that isn’t difficult in today’s NFL.
Robinson has made it clear that who the Titans draft could impact the team’s pursuit of Clowney, so that’s certainly something to keep an eye on as the draft progresses.
Should the Titans land an impact player at EDGE or defensive end, it could spell the end of Clowney potentially coming to Nashville.
