Barcoo is vastly underrated

San Diego State has had a recent success of defensive backs make it in the NFL like Parker Baldwin and Damontae Kazee. The next great in this group could be Luq Barcoo.

He is a playmaker and had a great 2019 season by leading college football in interceptions, passes defended and pass breakups. He also had that one game where he had three interceptions on three consecutive plays against Colorado State his past year.

Yet, despite having a nose for the ball, he is not being considered a draftable player and is around a 300-rated prospect.

Barcoo joined USA TODAY’s Draftwire for a Q&A and one of the many things he talked about was his ability to make plays.

“I feel like my mentality is just different. I’m always itching to make a big play. I’m always looking to make an impact on the field. To make the highlights, you have to be around the ball. The game revolves around the ball. Wherever the ball is, I’m gonna do my best to be around it and make a play on it.

“I feel like the best part of my game is my ability to create turnovers. Nine interceptions was a great result for me in 2019. Being around the ball and making plays on it is definitely the focal point of my game.”

Barcoo also added that he has spoken to about 20 teams who are interested in bringing him aboard.

Strengths

As mentioned, he led the nation in probably the three biggest categories for a defensive back in interceptions, pass break ups and passes defended. He just is always there to get the ball and he was coached by one of the best defensive minds in college football with Rocky Long who is an innovator.

Weaknesses

Prior to the bowl games and post-season All-Star games, some mock drafts pegged him at a third-round pick.

Perhaps his size is a bit of an issue at 175 pounds and 6-foot-1, however, that height seems to be fine for a cornerback seems good against bigger receivers. Weight might be an issue to avoid him from getting knocked around on the line of scrimmage.

There is also the level of competition from being in the Mountain West, but the NFL finds talent seemingly anywhere and all Barcoo needs is that one team to give him a chance.

Draft Projection

Most mock drafts do not have him being selected but do not be surprised if he gets taken in one of the later rounds. If Barcoo is not drafted, then he definitely will be one of the mostly sought after undrafted free agents.
