A likely NFL star?

San Diego State offensive lineman Keith Ismael was the leader of an Aztec offensive line that has produced some really good running games the past few years, plus keeping quarterbacks upright.

Last year’s rushing attack was not up to the typical standards set at San Diego State but part of that had to do with a tweak of the offense and also injuries. Protecting the quarterback the unit was third in sacks allowed.

Ismael is a two-time first-team All-Mountain West offensive lineman and is considered one of the top five centers in the upcoming NFL Draft. Being a center not only does the position require to be a great blocker but also is a set of eyes to help the quarterback call out coverages and makes some adjustments for what the defense is showing.

Strengths

Obviously, being an all-conference first-team member twice is a good start for Ismael’s strength. He uses great leverage to beat oncoming defenders and does not get bull rushed or pushed over often. He is very aggressive and finishes out plays to the whistle and is always looking to knock someone around with his head always looking to see who he can help on his team.

Also, his legs and thighs are huge and carries his weight well which contributes him to not being knocked around.

Weaknesses

Despite being strong from the waist down, Ismael has some issues driving a defensive lineman down the field on a running play. That is an issue in short-yardage situations when a quarterback sneak or a quick handoff is called. If he can not knock a defensive tackle off the line then he will have a tough time making it as a starting center in the NFL.

Draft Projection

Centers have to be really good to be drafted in the NFL and Ismael is however expected to be a late fourth- to fifth-round selection on Day 3 of the draft.
