When USA Basketball announced its preliminary 44-man roster for the Tokyo Olympics — which have been postponed to 2021 due to the novel coronavirus outbreak — three Brooklyn Nets made the list. Joe Harris got an invite after he played for Team USA during the 2019 FIBA World Cup, and Brooklyn’s superstars, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, also received invites.
At the time of USA Basketball’s announcement in February, Spencer Dinwiddie had already missed out on being named an NBA All-Star after he forced his way into the conversation while taking on a heavy load with Irving and Caris LeVert missing much of the 2019-20 season, and Durant yet to make his Nets debut. Still, Dinwiddie did not receive an invite from Team USA.
But the California-born point guard still has plans to play in the Olympics. he’s just not going to play for the country he was born and raised in.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Dinwiddie will play for Nigeria’s national team. The Nets point guard is “acquiring a Nigerian passport” so he can do so.
