Not that it is much of a surprise, but Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard wants to add more picks to the current slate of selections in the 2020 NFL draft.
With seven selections between Rounds 2–6, Ballard is going to want more regardless of the state he believes the team is in. It should already be expected that Ballard would make some moves to add picks, but he admitted as much during a conference call with the media on Friday.
“To be honest with you, I would like more picks. I feel very confident. I’d like more picks,” Ballard said. “We’ll see if that happens or not, but I feel confident in our group. I feel confident in our work and what we have done, and we think we are going to acquire good players.”
This isn’t a big shock. Every year since Ballard has run the draft for the Colts he has made a mid-draft trade to add more picks. We even broke down every mid-draft trade Ballard has made since his first draft in 2017.
The most likely pick that Ballard will trade back from is Nos. 34 or 44. In either case, Ballard can likely get a fourth or fifth-round pick in exchange for moving back with a team trying to move up in the second round.
Ballard might also be privy to trading back on Day 3 and possibly adding a seventh-round pick or two with a team that has multiple.
Ballard and the Colts front office have been strong when it comes to their Day 3 picks, especially the ones they get from the trade backs in the draft.
Some notable players that have been chosen with the new picks in a mid-draft trade include Marlon Mack, Jordan Wilkins and Anthony Walker to name a few.
It will be interesting to see what kind of moves Ballard will make but some type of trade back should be expected as he wants to add more picks.
