Tennessee football: Players who wore No. 42

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has a proud football program rich in history and tradition, and over the years many great players have played on Rocky Top.

Vols Wire looks at which players wore each jersey number for the Volunteers.

No. 42

The number goes back to 1938 in Big Orange football history and was first worn by Bob Suffridge.

Suffridge, a guard for the Vols from 1938-40, was a local boy from Knoxville. He remains Tennessee’s only three-time All-America selection and played on three UT teams that went a combined 31-2 and won the Knute Rockne Memorial Trophy as a senior for the most outstanding college lineman.

Suffridge, who died in 1974, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1961.

Last season, the number was worn by kicker Brent Cimaglia, one of the nation’s top kickers.
