Should the Colts pursue TE Trey Burton?

Trey Burton is now a free agent.

The Indianapolis Colts are in the market for a move tight end and one with a strong connection to head coach Frank Reich just became available.

The Chicago Bears are releasing tight end Trey Burton after two disappointing seasons under Matt Nagy. Dealing with injuries and inconsistent play in a bad offense, Burton couldn’t live up to expectations after departing from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Now a free agent, Burton makes sense for the Colts. They have Jack Doyle leading the room and with Mo Alie-Cox still developing, there is a big need for a move tight end—one that primarily produces as a pass-catcher.

Burton has the skill set to be a solid move tight end. He showed that a bit with the Bears in 2018 when he caught 54 passes for 569 yards and six touchdowns. However he dealt with injuries in 2019 playing only eight games while finishing the campaign on the injured reserve list.

Burton signed a four-year deal worth $32 million before the 2018 season and given the current status of his contract, the Colts wouldn’t have to pay much for him, especially since $4 million will be coming from the Bears.

This is an interesting situation for the Colts because Burton has a connection with Reich, who was his offensive coordinator for two seasons with the Eagles (2016–2017).

Given the need, connection with Reich and the likelihood of his contract being a cheap one-year deal, the Colts should take a look at Burton on the free agent market.
