Why a virtual NFL Draft in 2020 won’t hinder the Dolphins

With the 2020 NFL Draft set to be conducted remotely, the reports of dissatisfied general managers and team reps have bubbled to the surface as this year’s event has continued to inch closer. The worries? They range from concerns over other teams hacking online conferences and extend to the lack of information the teams have been able to collect via the Pro Day circuit. But at the end of the day, the show remains set to go on — and teams are going to have to adjust accordingly.

For the Dolphins, experience and cohesion to come into play and help protect the Dolphins from miscommunications and unnecessary chaos when the time comes to make critical decisions and selections. The Dolphins’ front office is littered with experienced executives beyond general manager Chris Grier, who himself stems from an extensive scouting background. With football executives like Reggie McKenzie and assistant general manager Marvin Allen in the Dolphins’ corner, there’s going to be little in the way of player case studies that at least one of Miami’s critical contributors hasn’t seen before.

What’s more is that the Dolphins have already been committed to a team building process that has been conducted with heavy communication between the coaching staff and the front office. Head coach Brian Flores has spoke often of his daily collaborations with Grier — all of that communication should all up to be a big asset for the Dolphins once the virtual draft is underway. There aren’t likely to be many surprises in opinions once the Dolphins come on the clock — as the daily exchanges will have added up to ensure Grier, Flores and the rest of the team’s football administration are all on the same page about what the best direction to take is.

The same can’t be said for all 32 teams — but the Dolphins have a front office stocked to the brim with experienced scouting figures. So while the environment may be unique and unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, the fact that Miami’s decision makers have been around the block and were already committed to daily communication with the coaching staff should protect the Dolphins from fumbling the draft due to the current conditions in which they’ll be drafting.
