Duke Blue Devils freshman Vernon Carey Jr. announced on social media on Friday afternoon that he will leave school early and declare for the 2020 NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-10 center was named the ACC Rookie of the Year after averaging 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and one assist in 31 games played. He led the Blue Devils in scoring, rebounding and blocks and was named to the All-ACC First Team.
Carey has emerged as a possible first-round pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and is projected to be selected 27th in the latest 2020 Rookie Wire NBA Mock Draft. He was a strong post-up threat at Duke but showed some decent shooting ability, which will need to improve at the next level.

Carey was often the best player on the court when he played but it is certain that he will need to evolve his game to match the style of play in the NBA. Many believe that if he can develop a consistent shot, he will have a bright future in the league.
