The case for the Vikings to draft Denzel Mims

Is Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims a good fit for the Vikings?

The NFL Draft is now just two weeks away and the Vikings still have several holes to fill. With the departure of wideout Stefon Diggs, the Vikings are going to have to find at least one talented receiver at some point of the draft.

Denzel Mims out of Baylor is a receiver that has skyrocketed up a majority of the analysts’ big boards. He had a good performance at both the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine, a big reason he has gotten first-round consideration.

Standing at 6-3, 207 pounds, Mims ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the combine. During his time at Baylor, he showed off that he had speed mixed with the ability to go up and win a jump ball. On top of the speed and elite catch radius, Mims has shown that he has great hands as well.

In his 2019 season at Baylor, Mims recorded 66 catches for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns. That is an average of over 15 yards per catch, showing he has good ability to stretch the field.

Mims could come in on day one and be an upgrade to the Vikings receiving core, but his route running could still use some improvement. He excels in running vertical routes, going up and getting the jump ball and using his speed to his advantage.

In an interview with draft analyst Scott Wright at the Senior Bowl, Mims was asked who his favorite team was growing up.

“My favorite team has always been the Minnesota Vikings,” Mims said. “I’ve never really told anybody that because they were losing at the time.”

Mims went on to say that the color purple is his favorite color, and that is a reason he was drawn to the Vikings on the TV.

The Vikings could use another wide receiver. The athletic ability of Mims would be exciting for Vikings fans. He is certainly someone to keep an eye on come draft weekend.
