Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed sports wagering into law in Dec. 2019, allowing mobile sports betting, as well as wagering to be done at three commercial and 23 tribal casinos across the state. Wagers can also be made at two race tracks hosting pari-mutuel horse racing. Sports betting revenue is taxed at 8.4 percent, with three commercial casinos in the Motor City paying an additional 1.25 percent in city tax.
Sports betting launched at Greektown and MGM Detroit casinos March 12, 2020, with MotorCity Casino also launching in mid-March. Two tribal casinos, including the Grand Traverse Bay in Acme Township, are operated by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel in Williamsburg also plans a full retail sportsbook with betting provided by William Hill, as well as the Leelanau Sands Casino on the western shore. None are online yet, however.
