After spending the first five years of his career with the Chargers, running back Melvin Gordon signed a two-year deal with the Broncos this offseason. Gordon opted to stay in the AFC West, which means he will face his former team twice in each of the next two seasons.
“It will be dope,” Gordon said during a conference call with reporters on March 27. “I’m excited. I was with those guys five years — great relationship with all of those guys. It’s going to be crazy. It’s going to be electric. It’s going to be a lot of trash talk. I know them. I know the defense. They’re definitely going to let me hear it. I’m going to let them hear it as well. It’s going to be fun.”
Gordon, 26, rushed for 4,240 yards and 36 touchdowns during his time in San Diego/Los Angeles. He will have something to prove against his former team but he has no ill will toward his ex-teammates.
“It’s definitely going to be a war out there,” Gordon said. “It’s definitely going to be exciting. Those are still my brothers. Still love those boys. Our bonds go beyond football. Obviously, it’s business when we’re out there. Obviously, I’m not with them anymore so I’m going to do whatever it takes to win.”
Denver will play the Chargers at home and on the road in 2020. The dates for those games (and the Broncos’ full schedule) should be announced in the coming weeks. The NFL hopes to have the schedule out by May 9.
