James White will undoubtedly be one of the New England Patriots’ offensive leaders next season. He’s been with the team for six seasons and emerged as one of the top pass-catchers, despite his role in the backfield.
Although the transition from a future Hall of Famer in Tom Brady to second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham will be difficult, White has confidence going forward. The Patriots could still make a move in free agency or the draft to attain another quarterback, but Stidham would start today if they don’t make any additional moves.
White spoke briefly about the transition during a conference call on Thursday.
“Guys come and go each and every year, so you have to be able to compete with new people,” White said, transcribed by NESN. “We’re confident in Stidham, confident in Hoyer, whoever it happens to be.”
Stidham had an impressive preseason in 2019 and sat behind Brady the entire time, soaking up as much knowledge as possible. He’ll also be backed by Josh McDaniels’ offensive gameplan and Bill Belichick’s stingy defensive unit.
“He came in and competed right away,” White said. “Our offense can be pretty complex, and he was willing to learn, willing to take coaching. He was fighting no matter what the situation is. The second year, he’ll come in ready to learn. We’re all competing trying to make each other better football players, be on the same page on offense so we can all help each other out.”
Stidham will need a ton of help to fill an enormous hole, but he has the supporting cast to make it happen.
