The Arizona Cardinals have retained 12 of their own free agents from last year. One is backup quarterback Brett Hundley, who comes back for his second consecutive one-year contract.
It was where he wanted to be and it makes sense, as his signing with the Cardinals a year ago brought him back home where he grew up.
“It was another good opportunity to stay where I wanted to stay, be where I wanted to be, be around family and friends,” he told reporters in a video conference.
The Cardinals’ offense is another reason why Hundley wanted to stay. It appealed to him last year as well. “This offense allows me to do everything that I can do and utilize to the best of my abilities,” he said.”
Hundley played well in the preseason and also contributed to one of the Cardinals’ five wins in 2019. In Seattle, after Kyler Murray injured his hamstring, Hundley finished the game and closed out the victory, leading the Cardinals to a game-sealing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
He could have gone elsewhere as there was interest from other teams.
“There were a couple (of teams who reached out), but at the same time, this is the place I want to be.”
Hundley brings continuity and a somewhat similar skillset to Murray. Plus, having a hometown player is always good.
It ends up being a perfect match for player and team.
