Following the first week of free agency, the priority needs for the Indianapolis Colts have become clearer with the wide receiver position likely sitting at the top of the list.
Though there is some promise in the room behind T.Y. Hilton, much of it is unproven. The addition of quarterback Philip Rivers should help the passing game to an extent but even so, some serious additions must be made to the room during the 2020 NFL draft.
Among the top prospects at the position is Baylor’s Denzel Mims. With the potential to be a true X-receiver, Mims has the athleticism and skill set to provide the Colts with a steady WR1 of the future.
There is at least some interest in Mims from the Colts’ side as they have had a FaceTime interview this offseason, per Justin Melo of Draft Wire.
#Baylor WR Denzel Mims worked out privately for the #Buccaneers & #Cardinals prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Meeting with prospects is a bit unorthodox this offseason. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the NFL ha ceased all workouts and formal meetings in person for prospects. This makes it a bit more difficult to engage with a prospect, but teams are making do.
With their first pick in the draft coming at No. 34 overall, the Colts should hope Mims is available. If he is, Chris Ballard should immediately pick up the phone and call the selection in.
Mims has a strong draft profile. His production was solid at Baylor coming off of a 2019 season that featured 66 receptions for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns. His athleticism and measurables are also off the charts.
At 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, Mims has the size to work on the boundary. He also crushed the three-cone drill, recording a 6.66 time, which is in the 90th percentile. Add in his 131″ broad jump (94th percentile) and his 4.38 in the 40-yard dash (90th percentile), and the Colts are looking at a potential star in the making.

Stat sheets and measurements are all fine and good. But Mims has the tape to back it up as well.

There are a handful of prospects that would fit well with the Colts, but Mims is truly one of the best talents in the draft. If he somehow slips to the second round, the Colts should be ecstatic to put his name on the card.
