Dayton forward Obi Toppin was named the 2020 Associated Press Player of the Year on Tuesday after leading the Flyers to the most wins in program history.
Dayton was set to claim the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament prior to its cancellation due to the coronavirus pandemic after posting a 29-2 record. Toppin averaged 20 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 blocks and one steal in 31 games.
Toppin established himself as a walking highlight reel this season after becoming one of the most prolific dunkers in the nation. He was known as a volume scorer, averaging 1.17 points per possession, and is currently projected to be selected 12th in the latest 2020 Rookie Wire Mock Draft.
Toppin has already declared for the 2020 NBA Draft and projects to be a solid role player at the next level and a likely starter in the right situation. He fits the model as an ideal big man on offense after shooting 63.3% from the field at Dayton and 39% from 3-point range.
