Phillip Lindsay will have extra motivation after Broncos signed Melvin Gordon

Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay will probably have something to prove in 2020. That’s great news for Denver’s offense.

After the Broncos agreed to terms on a two-year deal with Melvin Gordon on Friday, former Denver running back De’Angelo Henderson took to Twitter to question why the team would sign a Pro Bowl running back (Gordon) when they already had a Pro Bowl running back on the roster (Phillip Lindsay).

Lindsay initially liked the tweet.

Lindsay has since unliked the tweet (perhaps after realizing that fans can view everything he likes on Twitter).

Broncos fans might view this as Lindsay being disgruntled but that might not necessarily be a bad thing. When he entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018, Lindsay was motivated to prove that every team was wrong about him — he should have been drafted.

With that motivation, Lindsay played well enough to earn a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie, become the first undrafted offensive player to do so.

Last year, as Denver’s undisputed starter, Lindsay’s yards-per-carry average dropped from 5.4 to 4.5. His yards-per-catch average dropped from 6.9 to 5.6. Coincidence? Perhaps. But it’s fair to wonder if Lindsay performs at his best when he feels that he has something to prove.

Watching the Broncos make Gordon the sixth-highest paid RB in the league will likely motivate Lindsay to prove he’s a better player. That’s great news for Denver’s offense and bad news for opposing defenses.
