“There’s a lot of people out there refusing to respect the guidelines of social distancing and quite frankly, it’s pissing me off,” Jon Rahm said in a video posted on social media on Friday.
“Come on, millennials,” he goes on to say. “It is my generation. I know it’s spring break. I know everyone wants to have fun.
“But respect the rest of the people in society. This is not one of things that our generation can be like ‘Oh, somebody else will just take care of it.'”
The coronvirus pandemic has gripped the world, with almost 260,000 people now infected and more than 11,000 deaths. In the U.S., there are more than 17,750 cases and 225 deaths. These numbers are as of Friday evening.
Despite pleas from public health officials, young people, including members of Generation Z who are as old as 22, are still partaking in large gatherings like spring break vacations.
Some party-goers in particular are making headlines for their actions.
“If I get corona, I get corona. At the end of the day, I’m not going to let it stop me from partying,” spring break goer Brady Sluder told Reuters in Miami.
Rahm continued.
“Thank you for everybody in the health care system: nurses, doctors, anybody related and trying to help all the people in need. It’s unbelievable what you guys have been doing. And we cannot thank you enough.
“And from the bottom of my heart, millennials, please think twice about what you’re doing. I know we (younger people) have less of a risk of being infected and possibly dying. … but the people that are being affected the most are our elders. People that, if you remember, most likely fought in wars defending our freedom and the countries we live in so please, just stay at home. Wash your hands. It’s a very small price to pay.”
Please everyone respect the people around you as try to stay home and limit the amount of people you have contact with, this virus is not a joke#IStayAtHome Este vídeo está dedicado más al público estadounidense, estamos intentando prevenir lo que paso en España e Italia pic.twitter.com/GGVttZbe8I
