Don’t look now, but the Miami Dolphins are back to owning the NFL Draft in 2020 — even if they don’t own the first overall pick in this year’s event. The latest NFL.com mock draft from analyst Lance Zierlein has Miami making a big splash; one that actually would put the Dolphins in the driver’s seat in the 2020 NFL Draft. Zierlein’s mock has the Dolphins moving up to the number one overall selection to draft LSU quarterback Joe Burrow — a surprising move that has been kicked around by analysts but not one that has generated a lot of momentum.
Until now.
Here’s what Zierlein had to say about Miami’s big move:
“If there is any sense in Cincinnati that Burrow doesn’t want to be a Bengal long-term, then the team should listen to offers,” wrote Zierlein.
“An NFL executive I consulted with felt that including all three of Miami’s first-round picks in this deal would be too much, so I’m sending Cincy Pick Nos. 5 and 18, as well as second-round selections.”
And so, in fact, Zierlein’s mock landed the Dolphins quarterback Joe Burrow and kept another 1st-round selection in 2020 on the table for Miami. With that pick, the Dolphins drafted Houston offensive tackle Josh Jones — a raw but athletically gifted talent who would fit in well as a developmental, long-term piece for Miami’s coaches to develop and bring along throughout the course of his rookie season. The Dolphins’ track record in 2019 of player development should earn them comfort to work with players who are a bit more of a project, like Jones.
So, Dolphins fans; what do you say? Would you be happy with a first round haul of Joe Burrow and Josh Jones?
