Report: Bears were concerned about Cam Newton’s health

The Bears were reportedly interested in trading for QB Cam Newton, but it sounds like concerns about his health halted things.

The Chicago Bears made their first quarterback-related transaction of the offseason in trading for former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles.

Chicago sent a fourth-round pick to acquire Foles, which has some people up in arms considering his contract. But there was also a contingent that were upset that the Bears opted to trade for Foles when a former MVP was still out there in Cam Newton.

The Bears were reportedly interested in trading for Newton, but it sounds like concerns about his health halted things.

Newton had surgery on his injured left foot, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season after Week 2. One of the concerns about teams possibly trading for Newton was his health.

With teams not permitted to travel and any new deals pending physicals, it’s impossible to know for sure that Newton is good to go, which surely explains Chicago’s hesitancy.

The Panthers put an end to the Cam Newton era in Carolina, when they announced that he could “seek a trade” elsewhere. Carolina, meanwhile, agreed to a massive deal with Bridgewater to make him their new starter.

While the Bears weren’t in on Newton, they certainly upgraded the quarterback position in bringing Foles to compete with Mitchell Trubisky this offseason.
