Malachi Flynn receives another All-American Award

Today San Diego State added a few more recognitions, this time from USA Today as both Head Coach Brian Dutcher and junior guard Malachi Flynn were awarded coach of the year and second-team All-American, respectively, by the national publication.

Dutcher received his first national Coach of the Year award for his amazing work this season. The Aztecs began the year unranked and predicted to finish second in the Mountain West. Instead, the Aztecs finished 6th in the AP Top 25 Poll and won the Mountain West by a cool five games.

USA Today selected Dutcher over other top coaches in what was a competitive field. Dutcher was also named Mountain West Coach of the Year by his peers (coaches) and the media. The United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) named Dutcher the District IX Coach of the Year.

Flynn received his third All-American recognition today as USA Today named him a second team All-American. This went with his other second-team honor which was bestowed on him by CBS Sports. Sports Illustrated named Flynn a first-team All-American, making him the first Aztec to ever receive the honor.

Besides these honors, Flynn was also named Mountain West Player of the Year by the coaches and media, Newcomer of the Year by the media, Defensive Player of the Year by the coaches, and was all-Mountain West first team by both. Also, he was named the tournament MVP of both the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational and the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.

Expect more recognition for both as the offseason continues. In a crowded coaching field I would expect Dutcher to get a couple more awards. Flynn should pick up some more All-American recognition as more publications announce their winners.
