We live in a bananas world. An absolutely, no doubt about it, bananas world.
Which is why I can’t just laugh off this whole thing I’m about to talk about as being too crazy to happen and move on with with my life. I can’t be surprised if and when this thing happens. And I can’t be surprised if and when this thing doesn’t happen and I look like a silly dummy for even thinking maybe it could happen.
That’s just were my brain is at these days, for better or worse.
I’m talking, of course, about Tom Brady’s future and a scenario that’s being batted around about the GOAT going to the San Francisco 49ers to play for his boyhood team near his boyhood home.
I’m also talking about the chatter that Jimmy Garoppolo, the QB who led the 49ers to a fourth-quarter lead in Super Bowl 54 before losing a heartbreaker to the Chiefs just last month, going back to the Patriots.
Put the old mind blown GIF right here, please.
We are at that point in the NFL offseason where we start losing our minds a little bit while waiting for free agency to begin. We can’t wait to see some big moves, yet we have to wait until things officially get under in two weeks.
And there will be no bigger move than whichever one Brady finally makes.
So here we are, wondering if Brady could go to the 49ers and Garoppolo could go to the Patriots. What a world.
Brady, as we all know far too well, is a free agent and nobody knows for certain right now where he’ll be suiting up when training camp starts in July.
Just about everyone in the world has been giving their guesses ever since the Patriots lost the Titans in the playoffs in January. UFC boss Dana White made his pitch on Wednesday for Brady to join the Las Vegas Raiders. It’s all getting to be too much as we wait for the official word.
Tom E. Curran, who does a fantastic job as an insider with NBC Sports Boston, has spoken this week about how the 49ers are trying to make a late move to get involved in the Brady sweepstakes. This is a win-now type of league and the addition of Brady would be an upgrade at QB most likely for the defending NFC champs, but the GOAT doesn’t have much time left in his NFL career.
Apparently the 49ers aren’t worried about that. They have a great defense and a small championship window and they might want to make a risky move by adding Brady and dumping Garoppolo, Super Bowl 54 be damned.
Curran also spoke about the possibility of the 49ers sending Garoppolo back to Bill Belichick and the Patriots with a bit of a wink as to thank them for giving them the QB for a few years in a trade that happened in the middle of the 2017 season. Or maybe the Patriots would scoop him up after the 49ers cut him for Brady.
Curran also believes that Belichick and Josh McDaniels would be all for reuniting with Garoppolo, who shined during his time filling in for a suspended Brady at the start of the 2016 season.
49ers star tight end George Kittle showed his support for Garoppolo with an Instagram post on Wednesday that simply said: “Let’s run in back 10!”
So this is a scenario that isn’t exactly some deep conspiracy theory that has been baked up out of boredom.
If anything, it seems like a win-win for both teams. Sure, the Patriots have to say goodbye to the beloved Brady, but losing him to his boyhood team takes a tiny bit of the sting out. Plus, a Garoppolo return would help fans get over it a tiny bit faster as they’ve seen firsthand that Jimmy G can play.
You know what? Let’s just talk this thing into existence. Let’s root for the chaos that would ensue in the moments after these moves were reported on Twitter.
Why the heck not? Let’s get weird, NFL.
Let’s have some fun.
Let’s go full freakin’ bananas.
Wednesday’s biggest winner: Paul on Jeopardy!
Jeopardy! is really hard and I usually don’t know many of the answers. Whatever, I’m OK with it. I swear. But what I love is when I know the answer and a contestant doesn’t – and gives an unbelievably funny wrong answer. That happened Wednesday night when Paul buzzed in to give Joel Embiid’s nickname and said “What is ‘Do A 180?'” For real. That happened. And Embiid had some fun with it on Twitter.
Quick hits: Klopp’s perfect answer about the coronavirus… Oakley wants NBA to look at Knicks… Chapman signs a trash can cutout… Harper hits a shot… And more!
– Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp had a perfect answer to a question about the coronavirus.
– Charles Oakley wants the NBA to take a look at the Knicks, which is the exact opposite advice I have for any NBA fan.
– A fan got Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman to autograph an Astros trash can cutout, which is great.
– Bryce Harper hit a really far home run… but there’s no way it hit the freeway, as MLB wanted fans to believe.
– We ranked every 2020 Cup Series paint scheme heading into this week’s race in Phoenix.
– Does Philip Rivers have anything left to help a team?
