If only the Tennessee Titans had picked up Jack Conklin’s fifth-year option their starting right tackle wouldn’t be set up for a huge payday in free agency this offseason, which could lead to him playing elsewhere in 2020.
The only problem with that statement is that, at the time, the Titans actually made the right decision.
Leading into that final decision that came down last May, Conklin had suffered a torn ACL in 2017 and dealt with multiple knee issues and a concussion in 2018.
Even when he was healthy, Conklin simply wasn’t the same lineman that garnered First-Team All-Pro honors in his rookie campaign.
Going into training camp last season, there was a prevailing thought that Conklin might have to compete for his starting spot and could lose it to Dennis Kelly, who played well in his absence the year prior.
If not for Taylor Lewan getting suspended and Kelly being needed at left tackle, there’s a chance that might have happened.
So, it’s easy to see now that the Titans should have picked up Conklin’s fifth-year option after he rebounded in 2019, but criticizing them what was the right decision at the time it was made is the definition of “hindsight is 20/20.”
