The final day of the NFL Combine wraps up today with the back end of the defense, the cornerbacks and safeties, taking the field at Lucas Oil Stadium to work out. The Dolphins are in a fascinating situation here, because ideally this team is able to build up the trenches for the 2020 season and improve the team’s pass rush and offensive line alike. But with Brian Flores looking to utilize so many defensive backs on the field of play, it may be impossible for the Dolphins to forego adding secondary players early on.
Here are some of the safeties to earmark for the Dolphins today.
Antoine Winfield Jr – Minnesota
The son of former cornerback and long-time Minnesota Viking, Antoine Winfield Jr is as tough as they come and has a knack for making plays. He may not be huge, standing at 5-9 — but he is solid, weighing in at 203 pounds. Winfield plays downhill on every play and breaks on passes in a hurry. He is fearless to charge down hill and not afraid to stick his nose in and make a tackle. His mental make up is a perfect fit for what the Dolphins look for.
Kyle Dugger – Lenoir-Rhyne
This small schooler has some rare size and speed for a safety at 6-1 and 217 pounds. Dugger’s size immediately stands out on tape. His ability to close ground with explosiveness can eventually make him a force against the run. He will get a chance to prove his speed is at an NFL level and that his talent is worthy of being in the NFL here in Indy, but expect big things. He’s generally considered to be one of the freakiest athletes in this year’s draft.
J.R. Reed – Georgia
There really is nothing Reed does at a super high level but he is very smart and always seems to know where the ball is going. His film work and study habits are evident by his productivity verse his athleticism. From a mental aspect, Reed fits what the Dolphins look for in head smart defenders. With a decent Combine, look for Reed’s stock to improve.
