With some changes under center and the entire offense regressing, the Indianapolis Colts saw every week during the regular season that an infusion of explosiveness was necessary this offseason.
Though there are still some playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, explosiveness throughout the roster is a trait that has been lacking for the most part in recent seasons.
The Colts will be continuing their search to add more explosive talent to the offense as their big 2020 offseason approaches.
“We’re always going to be looking to add an explosive element. You can just look where I came from in Kansas City. It was a constant looking for some type of explosive element,” said Chris Ballard at the NFL combine. “I don’t think the cupboard is as bare as what everybody else does, but that’s always going to be something we’re always looking for.”
The Colts offense was painfully boring in 2019. From the inconsistent quarterback play to the injuries that decimated the wide receiver room, the Colts simply couldn’t get any explosiveness.
They will have the chance to do so throughout the upcoming offseason. With free agency just three weeks away and the 2020 NFL draft shortly to follow, Ballard has plenty of resources to make it work.
There are some options in free agency such as Amari Cooper (for now), Robby Anderson and Rashard Higgins. The draft will feature plenty of explosive players. First-round picks like Henry Ruggs III, CeeDee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy come to mind.
If they decide to wait, which is more likely, the Colts could target players like Denzel Mims and Devin Duvernay.
Regardless, the Colts have to get more explosive on offense. Some of the struggles came from the quarterback play while some of it came from a lack of weapons. But getting the offense back on its feet is a big need this offseason.
