The Bears have been mentioned in conjunction with nearly every veteran free agent quarterback this offseason.
With Mitchell Trubisky’s future in doubt in Chicago, the Bears are looking to add a veteran that can, at the very least, challenge him for the starting job in 2020.
There are no shortage of high-profile quarterbacks set to hit the free agent market, including Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, for those teams in need of assistance at the most important position.
NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks believes the Bears are among the teams that are the best fit for Teddy Bridgewater, who’s expected to cash in this free agency.
General manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy have given young quarterback Mitch Trubisky multiple votes of confidence, but the Bears would be wise to follow the Titans’ lead and bring in a veteran with starting experience to add some competition to the QB room. While Trubisky might win the initial training camp battle, Bridgewater could get the nod in the middle of the season and parlay a successful stint into a bigger payday in the Windy City or elsewhere.
It’s no secret that the Bears aren’t well off in terms of salary cap space, which after the release of Prince Amukamara and Taylor Gabriel now sits around $27 million. There are more concerns than the quarterback position this offseason, which means the Bears aren’t necessarily in a position to spend big money on a quarterback right now.
With that in mind, when it comes down to it, the Bears likely won’t be able to afford Bridgewater. According to Spotrac, Bridgewater’s market value is $20 million. But you have to wonder if the value will increase should a bidding war ensue.
But if general manager Ryan Pace believes Bridgewater is his guy, he’ll find a way to get it done. We know all about Pace’s conviction, especially when it comes to the quarterback position.
