NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly has a lot to say about former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and it’s all positive.
Casserly, who was a general manager in the NFL that won three Super Bowls with Washington, not only believes Tua is a great pick for early first-round draft picks, but that he’s “better than some QB’s who have been taken with the #1 pick in the Draft.”

As seen in the video, Casserly rates the 2018 Heisman finalist higher than the Browns’ Baker Mayfield and the Rams’ Jared Goff, both are big-name quarterbacks who have found some success in the league.
The comparison to Seattle’s Russell Wilson is explained in his praise of Tagovailoa.
“The guy plays fast,” says Casserly. “He gets rid of the ball fast, he moves fast, his decisions are fast. That’s pretty good I think.”
He also praises Tagovailoa’s ability to move outside of the pocket to make plays. This is a skillset that separates him from other prospects in this draft, but it also opens him to to scrutiny as he has been proven to be prone to injuries.
“I think this guy will excel,” says Casserly, a bold statement from the highly-respected analyst and former general manager.
Casserly speaks directly on the comparison to Super Bowl-winnng quarterback Wilson by claiming he and Tua can both beat defenses inside and outside the pocket.
He then goes on to explain Tagovailoa is more consistent than the 2018 No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield by being more consistent, and also has more throwing talent than Jared Goff, who went No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft.
It has become universally agreed upon that LSU’s Heisman-winning quarterback Joe Burrow will be the 2020 No. 1 overall pick to the Bengals, but that doesn’t mean he’ll have a more successful career.
Tagovailoa is most likely going to be drafted in the top-five, but regardless of where he ends up, Casserly is convinced he will thrive.
