Panthers coach Matt Rhule on Cam Newton: ‘I really want him on the team’

While Rhule would not commit to naming Newton his starter, he did tell reporters he really wants him on the team.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule just wrapped up a press conference with reporters in Indianapolis at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

Rhule had some interesting things to say. The elephant in the room was naturally the situation at quarterback, which he addressed before needing to be asked. To recap, Cam Newton is entering the final year of his contract and there’s been a flurry of speculation regarding his future in the media this offseason. Trade rumors and hot takes abound.

On that subject, while Rhule would not commit to naming Newton his starter, he did tell reporters he really wants him on the team.

Rhule also commended Newton for what he’s been doing with his recovery and said he “absolutely” expects him to be on the roster in September.

Read into that what you will, but we have no reason not to believe Rhule when he says he wants him.

There are a lot of pieces to account for. It’s definitely a positive that both the head coach and the player in question say they want him to stay, though.
