It’s all eyes on Ryan Kerrigan for the Washington Redskins.
Ron Rivera and the front office made a tough call on Jordan Reed, releasing the tight end and joining the cut pile also including Paul Richardson and Josh Norman.
Could Kerrigan be next?
While the veteran pass rusher seems to have plenty left in the tank, one could argue the new Redskins leadership simply wants to get younger. Kerrigan is now 31 years old and has just a single year left on his contract.
More went into the other mentioned releases obviously. But it sure doesn’t hurt to mention that Kerrigan carries an $11.7 million cap hit in 2020.
The Redskins aren’t hurting for cap space but an investment in Montez Sweat last year and another probable premium pick on the spot this year in Chase Young might mean the front office wants that space to use elsewhere.
Then again, who better than Kerrigan for young guys to work with for at least one season before taking over? On paper, cutting Kerrigan might make some sense on a few different levels — but it’s not as easy to guarantee like the Norman and Reed releases.
